What's new

What we have built, month by month, in BlackSlate and BlackSlate for Writers.

    • Your account

Download a copy of everything you have saved, or delete your account and its data, from the account page.

    • Legal

The Terms, Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy now live in one place on blackslate.ai, and the app links to them.

    • Security

A published security contact (security.txt) for anyone who finds a vulnerability.

    • Milestones

Anniversaries of real events, people and works from 2027 to 2034, each with the reason it matters.

    • Thematic Debates

100 live public arguments, with both sides set out, as starting points for drama.

    • US rights evidence

Each record shows what the US date rests on: the renewal search, the rule applied, and what is still unchecked.

    • Line bank and music cues

Writers can collect lines they want to keep, and tag music to a passage of the script.

    • Typewriter

An optional typewriter sound for the editor, built from real recordings.

    • Scene tools

Reorder and omit scenes, add notes to lines, rename a character everywhere at once, and compare two drafts side by side.

    • Beats

Mark story beats on the page; predicted beats show dashed until the writer confirms them.

    • Preview Links and folders

Share a read-only preview of a script, and sort scripts into folders on the slate.

    • Persistent undo

Undo history survives closing the script.

    • Clearance check

Scan a script for named brands, people and places that may need clearance, and read the results as a report.

    • A4 by default

New scripts start on A4, the UK page, with US Letter one setting away.

    • Story structure

A structure guide scaled to the length of the script, with acts you can hover and jump to.

    • Scene navigator and reports

Jump between scenes, and see every character and location with where they appear.

    • Revision mode

Coloured drafts and locked pages, the way production revisions are issued.

    • Final Draft and PDF

Import and export Final Draft (.fdx) files, and export a correctly formatted PDF.

    • Title page and dual dialogue

A title page editor, and two characters speaking at once.

    • Undo, scene numbers, find and replace

The editing basics a screenplay needs.

    • Groundswell

Stories people are already telling online, scored for how they could work on screen and checked for clearance risk.

    • Honest US rights

Records no longer claim US public domain status where the renewal has not been checked; they say "Not verified".

    • Better genres and synopses

Genres filled in from TMDb, Wikidata and Open Library, and synopses shown where we have them.

    • Bold, italic, underline

Inline styling in the screenplay editor.

    • Slate report

Export the whole slate and its deal terms as one report.

    • Deal terms, Signals and Casting

Track option fees, terms and dates for each project; see the evidence that a project fits the market; and find cast with the reasons behind each suggestion.

    • BlackSlate for Writers

The screenplay editor for writers on a producer's slate, with correct page breaks.

Producers and development teams start here. Writers come in through the producer who has them on a slate.
