Most development slates are built on guesswork. Not anymore.

BlackSlate sees what's free to adapt, what's never been told and what commissioners are hunting for, while everyone else is still guessing. Every call comes with its proof.

Most of what gets developed never gets made

The option runs out while the lawyer is still chasing a 1950s renewal. The commissioner bought something just like it last spring. A project greenlit on this year's trends reaches the screen two years later, after the audience has moved on. Most of that is knowable in advance, if somebody has done the reading.

The Swiss-Army Knife for development teams

6 tools, one place for everything you need as a creative development team.

Public Domain Rights
When a work enters the public domain in 6 territories, and the rule behind each date.
Untapped Stories
Over 25,000 true stories with no known adaptation, each with the case for making it and three plain risk scores.
Milestones
Over 5,600 anniversaries from 2027 to 2034, ranked by how commissionable they look, with a note on whether archive footage exists.
Thematic Debates
100 arguments a story can be about, each set out as two answers so neither one wins by default.
The Slate
Projects, drafts and deal terms in one place. Send a script as a Preview Link that expires when you say.
Writers
A screenplay editor in A4 or US Letter that imports Final Draft and flags clearance problems before a producer finds them.

18 tools, in the order a project needs them

Grouped by the 4 jobs a development team does every week. Pick one to see it working.

Built from the live database: real stories and real counts.

Every date, with the rule behind it

Every draft and every screener, on the record

Send scripts that carry the reader's name, know which pages they read, and keep proof of every draft your writers deliver.

Watermarked Preview Links

Every page carries the reader's name and the date, with a tracking code in the corner. Links expire when you say, and you see who opened them, which pages they read and for how long.

Draft Deadlines That Chase Themselves

Set the stages and dates once. Writers are reminded a week, three days and a day before each one, can ask for more time in their portal, and deliver there.

Proof of Every Delivery

Each draft delivered through the portal is logged with the time, the sender's IP address and a SHA-256 fingerprint of the exact file, and exports as an evidence certificate.

See Exactly What Changed

Open a new draft against the last one and see every line added and cut, with notes kept on the draft they were written about.

  • One schedule across the slate: overdue, due this week, due this month.
  • Options and deal terms, with a warning before anything expires.
  • The whole slate, exported as a report.

Hand in a draft that is ready to sell

See the act that runs long, the lead who drops out of the second act and the brand you cannot clear before your producer does. Then send it out as a correctly paged PDF in A4 or US Letter, or straight back into Final Draft.

No. It tells you what the records say and which rule produced each date. Before you spend money on a property, a clearance lawyer still signs it off. BlackSlate makes that conversation shorter.

Public records and open datasets, including Wikidata and the US copyright renewal catalogues. Each date is traced to the rule that produced it, and the record shows which rule that was.

It means nobody has checked the renewal records for that work, so it is neither confirmed free nor confirmed protected. We show it as exactly that and leave the decision to you.

Yes. Rights dates are shown for the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia and New Zealand on every record.

They stay in your account. A Preview Link shows a script to the person you send it to, expires when you say, and you can revoke it at any time.

Yes, from your account page whenever you like.
